How does the authorization process work?
For each new food, the European Commission follows a rigorous process to ensure its safety before approving its sale on the market.

EFSA publishes scientific opinion
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) analyses the scientific data and expresses its opinion on the safety of the novel food.

The European Commission drafts the regulation
After the EFSA opinion, the Commission has up to 7 months to draft the regulation authorising the novel food.

Approval by Member States
The regulation is voted on by the PAFF Committee , composed of representatives of the Member States.

Publication in the Official Journal of the European Union
If approved, the regulation is published in the Official Journal and becomes official.

Authorization and marketing
After publication in the Official Journal, cricket flour can be produced and sold throughout the EU.
